Do you ever read the signs outside of churches? They usually identify the name of the congregation. But sometimes they also provide a message. Here’s a sign from one church with a message which might bring a smile. It reads: “If you are waiting for a sign from God, this is it!” Indeed, many people do wait for, or look for, signs from God. However, I doubt that such a message on a billboard is what they are looking for.
King Ahaz wasn’t looking for a sign from God, but God offered it to him nevertheless. Ahaz had the opportunity of a lifetime; indeed the opportunity of many lifetimes. God had said to him, “Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be as deep as Sheol or high as heaven” (7:11 ESV). God was saying to Ahaz, in effect: “Ask me for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights. Ask me for any sign, the sky’s the limit, to confirm that I am with you and will protect you from your enemies!”
