Aug 19/20 – Zode In The Road – Lutheran Weekend Worship

Today we continue our August series on God and Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss dedicated himself to writing simple, entertaining, and thoughtful poems that used basic words children would understand. But occasionally, Dr. Seuss would introduce what some people would consider nonsense words – like in his poem about the Zode in the Road. Apparently, even this clear nonsense word was deeply researched. “Zode” came from a Greek word that meant “ladder”, a device people would use to get somewhere. With that insight, I’ll consider Dr. Seuss’ poem: “The Zode In the Road” and a couple of verses from the Old Testament prophet, Jeremiah 6:6, 16.

Aug 12/13 – Oh, the Places You’ll Go – Lutheran Weekend Worship

Today we continue our August series on “God and Dr. Seuss”. I’ll consider
a book Dr. Seuss wrote titled: “Oh, the Places You’ll Go”. It’s a cute poem that tells children they have potential, they have feet in their shoes that
enable them to go places and brains in their heads and they “know what they know”. As time goes on, they’ll be able to decide what to do with their lives. They will need some guidance, but they can figure out a lot of it all on their own. I got a little uncomfortable when I first read the poem. What makes a person proud? I’m reminded of the businessmen in James 4:13-16 who don’t seem to be boastful and proud to me… and yet God says they were. So, I’ll talk today about “Oh, the Places You’ll Go”

This week’s Contemporary service left the building, where it became the centerpiece of our community-oriented “Barbecue, Backpacks and Blessings” weekend in the park event!
